Jamie Oliver has been drawn to the kitchen since he was a child working in his father's pub-restaurant. He showed not only a precocious culinary talent but also a passion for creating (and talking about) fresh, honest, delicious food. In the past decade, the shaggy-haired "Naked Chef" of late-'90s BBC2 has built a worldwide media conglomerate of TV shows, books, cookware and magazines, all based on a formula of simple, unpretentious food that invites everyone to get busy in the kitchen. And as much as his cooking is generous, so is his business model -- his Fifteen Foundation, for instance, trains young chefs from challenged backgrounds to run four of his restaurants.
Now, Oliver is using his fame and charm to bring attention to the changes that Brits and Americans need to make in their lifestyles and diet. Campaigns such as Jamie's School Dinner, Ministry of Food and Food Revolution USA combine Oliver’s culinary tools, cookbooks and television, with serious activism and community organizing -- to create change on both the individual and governmental level.

Beaver Found at San Mateo Creek

Amazing Discovery Highlights
Biologically Diverse Watershed

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 February, 2010 : - - San Clemente -- This week, San Onofre State Park officers discovered a North American Beaver at the river mouth of the San Mateo Creek. According to State Parks officials, the species was once a native species to the San Mateo Creek area, but were thought to be largely extinct in the area.

Officials speculate that the animal may be related to a small population of beaver, which was re-introduced into the Santa Margarita watershed by the Department of Fish and Game in the 1940‚s as a means of erosion control. Since then, the beaver have migrated to nearby creeks and watersheds in the area, including those in the Cleveland National Forest and San Mateo Creek.

While State Parks officials are unclear about where this specific beaver originally resided, they are sure it came from one of the streams that flows into the San Mateo Creek. San Mateo Creek has been the site of an ongoing battle between the Surfrider Foundation and other environmental groups, and the Transportation Corridor Agencies, who are seeking to build a toll road project through the watershed.

"This discovery supports our assertion that the San Mateo Creek has a thriving watershed ecosystem that deserves the highest level of protection from its source in the mountains to the ocean," says Mark Rauscher, Surfrider Foundation's Assistant Environmental Director.

According to State Park scientists, the animal had suffered trama prior to being found and unfortunately succumbed to those injuries after being captured.

1 Wave 11 Shots

Richard Holcombe sent me 11 Images of one wave at Upper Trestles, that he shot of me back on 11-08-2009. He shot the images digitally at 3200 ISO, the shots were very grainy, but a nice sequence of a ride on one wave. Loving to waste time, an looking for some photoshop exercise I manipulated the images (3 hours) worth to romanticize the shots and give them a different feel. Afterwards I wanted to see if I could put the 11 images into one song and make it work. 1 Wave 11 Shots was what I came up with.

Camera Pro Chase Jarvis Preaches iPhone Photography

Our culture is more saturated with images than ever, but we're also more involved in creating and spreading those pictures through easily available technology and the Web. Cameraphones -- the standard phone type now, rather than the exception -- are plugged straight into the Web, enabling uploads in just a few clicks. Wi-Fi storage cards, as photographer Stephen Ferry explains, are shattering even that final gap in the "immediacy circuit." In other words, photos can be spread worldwide milliseconds after the shutter is pressed, an unbelievable process even 10 years ago.

We walked New York's High Line with pro photographer Chase Jarvis, known for his empowering affirmation that the best camera is the one that's with you. These days, it's far more likely to be your phone's camera than a traditional shooter, and Jarvis suggests not sweating the lower quality sensor and lens. Sure, having a high-end SLR would be great, but what's more important, he says, is capturing the moment, be it a home run at a little league game or the way light is reflecting on a window. To that end, he's created Best Camera, an iPhone app that lets you shoot, apply multiple filters and effects, and share via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and the Best Camera photography community. We've also included some of his iPhone shots in a gallery to give you some ideas to get started.
